What is OpenWrt?
OpenWrt is described as a Linux distribution for embedded devices.
Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developer, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.

Kamikaze 8.09.2
The OpenWrt team would like to announce the release of Kamikaze 8.09.2

This is the last update of the 8.09 release series, with the following notable changes:
* pptp nat contracting removed on brcm-2.4, cause of dnat off-by-one port forwarding bug
* added antenna gpio support for nanostation loco2
* backported swconfig and IP-175C support for DIR-300 and similar atheros devices
* added a combined atheros image format with sysupgrade support
* fixed ethernet issues on fonera+
* fixed wgt634u regresssion introduced in 8.09.1
* disabled tcp ecn by default
* improved sysupgrade reliability
* added mtd support for fis table layout on redboot based systems
* add support for creating VMware VMDK images for x86
* fixed ipv6 interface setup on boot
* numerous madwifi fixes
* fixed ImageBuilder and SDK
* fixed failsafe mode on fonera+ and fonera 2.0
* fixed memory leaks in miniupnpd
* fixed escaping issues in ddns-scripts
* update X-Wrt to 8.09.2
* update LuCI to v0.8.8
* security fixes for openswan, tiff, libpng, kernel, curl, gnutls, openssl and dnsmasq

Note: The brcm47xx still won't work for those of you needing broadcom wifi, stick to brcm-2.4.

HackerSpaceBrussels (HSB) announces the second Wireless Battle Mesh,
which aims to test 3 popular WiFi routing protocols (OLSR, Batman and
Babel), in Brussels on Saturday and Sunday 17-18 October 2009.

networks (see below)
* Sat 10 Oct @19:30: IPv6 presentation (Filip P.) + panel on
possibilities and pittfalls of IPv6 for free networks
* Tue 13 Oct - Fri 16 Oct: OpenWRT workshops (we're still up to
organising things, some points of interest: openwrt installation and
config, kamikaze build environment, ssh keys infrastructure, firmware
generation, UCI configuration tool, asterisk/ SIP phone)
* Friday 16th Oct @ 18:00 : Deploy the nodes
* Sat 17 Oct @ 14:00: Deploy the nodes, setup tests

IRC meetings
============
We setup some IRC meetings to prepare the configuration: IP's, versions,
and everything that took too much time at WBM v1. The meetings will be
held on the tuesdays of 15 and 22 September and 06 October at 21:00 CET
on irc.freenode.net channel #hsbxl. People from brussels and around are
invited to join us at the hackerspace.

OpenWrt joins SPI as associated project
OpenWrt and Software in the Public Interest (SPI) are pleased to announce an agreement to place OpenWrt under the SPI umbrella as an associated project. OpenWrt has hereby become a non-profit organization with the benefits this entails. OpenWrt joins such esteemed free and open source projects as Debian, PostgreSQL, OpenOffice.org, and madwifi.org. SPI makes a complete list of its associated projects available on its website.
Gregers Petersen, OpenWrt liaison to SPI, said: "Becoming a member of SPI strengthens OpenWrt by defining us as a project rather than a group of individuals. OpenWrt chose to join SPI due to its strong position as legal entity, their purpose and goals are consistant with our views and OpenWrt alreadey had lasting relationships with several other SPI member projects. OpenWrt believes that collaboration is one of the forces which drives free software forward and extending the SPI umbrella is a manifestation of this"
Jimmy Kaplowitz, SPI Secretary, said: "We welcome OpenWrt into its new relationship with SPI. OpenWrt has a long history of enabling wireless networking equipment owners to have full control and flexibility to use their devices in countless ways. We look forward to supplying OpenWrt with the organizational assistance they need to flourish as a valuable free software project."

OpenWrt @ LinuxTAG 2009 in Berlin, Germany
OpenWrt will this year have a booth at "LinuxTAG 2009" (www.linuxtag.org), taking place in Berlin, Germany from 24th to 27th of June.
The OpenWrt booth will be located at hall7.2b, and it is shared with the kvm-project.
For those who are going to attend the LinuxTag 2009 event, please feel free to visit, ask, entertain and talk to the OpenWrt developers who staff the booth.
